چکیده

Click through rates (CTR) offer useful user feedback that can be used to infer the relevance of search results for queries. However it is not very meaningful to look at the raw click through rate of a search result because the likelihood of a result being clicked depends not only on its relevance but also the position in which it is displayed. One model of the browsing behavior, the Examination Hypothesis [16, 5, 6], states that each position has a certain probability of being examined and is then clicked based on the relevance of the search snippets. This is based on eye tracking studies [3, 8] which suggest that users are less likely to view results in lower positions. Such a position dependent variation in the probability of examining a document is referred to as position bias. Our main observation in this study is that the position bias tends to differ with the kind of information the user is looking for. This makes the position bias query specific. In this study, we present a model for analyzing a query specific position bias from the click data and use these biases to derive position independent relevance values of search results. Our model is based on the assumption that for a given query, the positional click through rate of a document is proportional to the product of its relevance and a query specific position bias. We compare our model with the vanilla examination hypothesis model (EH) on a set of queries obtained from search logs of a commercial search engine. We also compare it with the User Browsing Model (UBM) [6] which extends the cascade model of Craswell et al[5] by incorporating multiple clicks in a query session. We show that the our model, although much simpler to implement, consistently outperforms both EH and UBM on well-used measures such as relative error and cross entropy.

Characterize Search Intent Diversity into Click Models

Modeling a user’s click-through behavior in click logs is a challenging task due to the well-known position bias problem. Recent advances in click models have adopted the examination hypothesis which distinguishes the document relevance from the position bias. In this paper, we revisit the examination hypothesis and observe that user clicks cannot be completely explained by the relevance and th...

Revisiting Energy-GDP Nexus for the Selected Countries of the Middle East Region

This paper investigates the relationship between total energy consumption and GDP in six countries of the Middle East , including Iran,Pakistan,Saudi Arabia,Oman,Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. The data are annual and spanning the period 1980-2012.We employed Hsiao’s (1981) methodology to examine causality relation between total energy consumption and GDP.The empirical findings show a uni...

Revisiting the Effects of Growth Uncertainty on Inflation in Iran:An Application of GARCH-in-Mean Models

This paper investigates the relationship between inflation and growth uncertainty in Iran for the period of 1988-2008 by using quarterly data. We employ Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity in Mean (GARCH-M) model to estimate time-varying conditional residual variance of growth, as a standard measures of growth uncertainty. The empirical evidence shows that growth uncertain...

Trend Break or Unit Root in GDP of Iran

It has been suggested that existing estimates of the long-run impact of a surprise move in income may have a substantial upward bias due to the presence of a trend break in 1970s (1350s) and 1980s (1360s) gross domestic product (contained oil) data of Iran. This article shows that the statistical evidence does not warrant abandoning the no-trend-break null hypothesis at the 5% significance leve...

Is positive income elasticity of demand really associated with normal goods?: revisiting the Slutsky equation and net benefit ratio

Incorporating a household’s net sale status into a rearranged Slutsky equation with combined ordinary and endowment income effects, this paper aims to reinterpret the income elasticity of demand in the case of buying and selling and to associate it with types of goods in a novel manner. To this end, the Deaton’s (1989) net benefit ratio (NBR) approach is expressed as the difference between orig...
